HistoryElectron Machine Corporation is very proud of our unique history and deep roots in the electronic instrumentation industry. Carl Vossberg, Jr., the founder of Electron Machine Corporation, studied electronics at the City College of New York, Columbia University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During WWII, he worked for the U.S. Office of Strategic Service (now CIA) participating in the development of remote radio transponders, artillery tracking systems, weapon fire detection controllers, and video transmission.
After the war, Carl Vossberg Jr. set out to apply some of this electronics technology to industrial applications. Electron Machine Corporation was formed in 1946 in the back of a radiator repair shop in New York. Instruments for diameter and thickness measurements for steel and cable products were conceived, developed, and licensed to other manufacturers. These instruments include the first commercial x-ray thickness gage, optical cable diameter gages, and an industrial process control computer.

In 1952, Electron Machine Corporation moved to Umatilla, Florida, where operations continue today. The first in-line process refractometer was developed to fulfill a need within the developing concentrated Citrus industry and 25,000 square feet of manufacturing facilities were built. In 1977, Carl Vossberg III began the next generation of leadership and expanded the use of refractometers on numerous applications in the food, chemical, and pulp/paper industries throughout the world. Microprocessor technology was integrated into all of the instrumentation vastly improving accuracy and reliability.

Manufacturing and designing continues today with another generation of Vossberg leadership. As a vertically-integrated manufacturer, we have complete control over the time it takes to manufacture our instruments providing the highest levels of service and support to our customers. Superb quality control is attained by adapting modern technology and practices to existing designs. These include in-house microprocessor and DSP software design, surface-mount PC card design and assembly, 3D CAD/CAM designing, CNC machining, and MIG/TIG welding. The MDS Monitor Divert System is a BLRBAC compliant Black Liquor solids monitoring system designed specifically for Black Liquor recovery boilers.

The MDS Monitor Divert System consists of two completely independent MPR E-Scan Hybrid-Digital refractometers with a separate monitor console that supervises the proper operation of each refractometer. The monitor constantly insures that all parameters remain within operational limits and applies the proper divert or alarm actions should a fault or low solids liquor be detected. A built-in printer records all actions with a date and time stamp. The entire system is designed to be user friendly with large daylight-readable color displays and an intuitive menu-driven interface.

Isolation Valves are also required to meet the BLRBAC guidelines and allow the refractometer sensing heads to be isolated from an active pipeline should maintenance be needed. The system closely monitors the position of these isolation valves to verify that the refractometers are in service.

All functions of the MDS Monitor Divert System are automatic. For example, should a refractometer fault occur the unit is electronically removed from service and an alarm is activated. Simultaneously the output signal is driven low to warn the operator to disregard this reading. The monitor system then isolates, displays the fault and provides a hard copy record on the built-in printer. Liquor diversion is now controlled by the refractometer in service.

REFRACTOMETERS FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY

The MPR E-Scan has numerous applications within the chemical industry. In general, the MPR E-Scan can measure the strength of a chemical when diluted with water (or another chemical).

If there is a concern with optical coating, a hand-operated brush cleaner is normally the preferred method. Various material alloys are available for wetted parts and Teflon® coating is available for non-wetted parts.

The DSA E-Scan is an automatic, bench-top, critical angle refractometer with a digital readout and temperature-controlled sample chamber. It quickly and convienently measures the critical angle of refraction of virtually any sample fluid that the in-line MPR E-Scan is used to on.The reading directly correlates to various measurements including percent dissolved solids, Brix, and refractive index providing a secondary reference that is much faster than most laboratory methods Utilizing a Digital Signal Processor and fast Analog-to-Digital converters, the digital measurement of sample liquids is both fast and accurate. The small size and rugged design of the DSA allows for operation in the field and in areas where space is limited. The MPR E-Scan is a hybrid-digital critical angle in-line process refractometer.It is used to measure the refractive index of process fluids and may be used as an error indicator or an integral part of a complete process control system.Refractive index can be directly correlated to dissolved solids and displayed as Brix, percent, or other measurement unit. The MPR E-Scan is a rugged, industrialized, in-line process refractometer. It directly measures the refractive index of process fluids and then displays the reading in any number of customer-desired units (Brix, Percent Solids, Dissolved Solids, SGU, R.I., etc.). This reading may be used as an error indicator or part of a complete process control system. A high-resolution color display and a 4-20mA output is standard. HART® protocol, RS-232, and RS-422 outputs are available. Each sensing head is custom tailored and calibrated specifically for the desired process application to ensure the most accurate and useful reading. A simple 0-10Vdc signal is used to transmit the reading from the sensing head to the electronics console, ensuring a robust reading that has a minimal chance of being effected by interference. The entire package is NEMA 4X rated and designed and manufactured with the best materials for each application to provide years of trouble-free service with a minimum amount of maintenance.
